Windows 7 and Asus 1005HAB (EEE PC)
12.1.2009: Just installed Linux Mint 8 on the 1005HAB (dual-booting alongside Win 7). Runs great, and wi-fi and the Fn keys work great, too.
10.31.2009: For available downloads for the 1005HAB, read this post.
Added 10.10.2009: I was asked in a comment how to get the multi-touch funcionality working on the 1005HAB touchpad. You need to install the Touchpad driver in Windows XP compatibility mode.
Note: this procedure covers the Asus 1005HAB but should work on others in the Asus EEE PC line of netbooks, too.
Recently, I bit the bullet, broke down, and got me a netbook! I've been eyeing them for a while now, and while it'll probably never replace my "main" laptop or desktop, it's great for bus trips, waiting rooms, coffee shops, planes — basically anywhere space is a commodity.
So I've got my sleek, sexy and ultra-portable netbook running...Windows XP?? Frankly, I'm sick of XP...I mean it has been great and all, but it's definitely starting to show its age.
First I tried the Ubuntu netbook remix which, frankly, worked poorly on this particular model — I'll wrote more on that sometime (fanboys take note: I am not dissing Linux! It just didn't work for this particular case. No flame wars, please.)
I've been happily running Windows 7 on two desktops (one super powerful, the other crappy) and one fairly powerful Core 2 laptop, so I decided to give it a go on the lowly netbook. To my surprise, it ran about the same as XP. So far I am very pleased with the performance of Windows 7 on lower-spec machines.
There was just this one annoying issue: an unknown device in Device Manager. Worse, half of my function keys didn't work; but thankfully, the solution is easy. You need the Asus ACPI driver. You can either copy it from the driver disk that came with the 1005HAB, search for it on the Asus website, or — even better — download it right here!
Extraxt the ZIP file somewhere, and then right-click on the AsusSetup.exe file. On the "Compatibility" tab, choose Windows XP (Service Pack 2) and click "Run this program as an administrator" at the bottom. Click OK, run the AsusSetup.exe file, and you're done. The device gets recognized, and you can get back to Windows 7 / netbook bliss.
Note: You may also want to install the Synaptic touchpad driver and the Super Hybrid Engine software that come on the Asus driver disc. Follow the exact Windows XP compatibility procedure as described above to install.
Any other questions about installing Windows 7 on the 1005HAB? (or any netbook, for that matter) Drop me a note below.

so After I do that how do i get the multi touch pad to work i can’t seem to be able to install that?
October 11th, 2009 - 01:20
@Kirin,
You also need to install the Synaptic driver in XP compatibility mode. This can either be found on the Asus CD that came with the PC, or you can download it directly from my site.

Did you ever get the rest of the function keys working?
October 22nd, 2009 - 10:40
@ Ralph, yes I did.
You have to install a certain XP utility (using XP compatibility mode again; same procedure as above) but I can’t remember what it’s called. I’ll check on my netbook tonight and report back!

@Curtis, you ran the ACPI driver in XP compatibility mode right?
October 25th, 2009 - 20:53
Hi Andrew. Finally took the plunge. Works great. However, most of my function keys don’t work. Specifically, the volume keys. Do you recall which utility fixes that?
Thanks!
October 26th, 2009 - 09:23
Hey Ralph,
As far as I remember, here are the Utilities I installed to get all of the Fn keys working. Remember to install all of them in XP compatibility mode as detailed in my post above, or it won’t work.
1. The ACPI utility – I am 99% sure this installs the Asus Tray Utility, which gets most of the Fn keys working.
2. The Super Hybrid Engine thing – this gets the performace Fn keys working (namely, the one on the space bar).
3. The Synaptic touchpad driver.
4. Also look in Device Manager to make sure all drivers are installed properly
I am pretty sure that’s it! Let me know if you get it working. All of the downloads are available on http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx

Hey Ralph, thanks for posting this online, you saved me a bunch of frustration!
October 30th, 2009 - 18:38
Oh one question though, I can’t fint he super hybrid engine on the download website. Did they remove it? I tries the SHE for the 1005HA, but unfortunately that doesnt work…
October 31st, 2009 - 12:27
@Christel,
Here ya go: http://andrewblock.net/?p=495. Remember to use XP compatibility mode as described above (if you’re using Win 7).

Followed your instructions and get this error:
Does not support this operating system: WNT_5.1H_MCE
November 18th, 2009 - 17:33
I’m running Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit on my Eee PC 1005hab, so far I’m very pleased. I even got Hybrid Engine running, and GMABooster works great to bring out some graphics performance from the modestly equipped IGP. I got my fn keys working too, but the only thing is when I try to switch resolutions I can’t get any of the 1024×768 modes (panning or compressed). I only get 800×600 or 1024×600.
I upgraded to a single Corsair value 2GB pc-2 5300, added an external WD Passport 250GB hdd, and an LG slim DVD+/-RW drive.
November 19th, 2009 - 03:11
I figured out how to fix that WNT_5.1H_MCE problem.
Just go into asussetup.ini and change where it says WNT_5.1H to WNT_5.1H_MCE
problem solved.
November 23rd, 2009 - 21:22
I’m still getting that error.
“Does not support this operating system: WNT_5.1H_MCE”
Can you detail the location path to the file to edit?
November 29th, 2009 - 19:22
Buckaroo & Ray,
The ‘ asussetup.ini’ file should be in the same directory as the ‘AsusSetup.exe’ file.
November 29th, 2009 - 19:28
Hey SIlver,
I can’t get any resolutions besides 1024×600 and 800×600, either.
December 4th, 2009 - 19:46
Hey Andrew,
I’m trying to install the ACPI drivers on my 1005HAB, but after I follow your instructions, I get a popup stating “Asus ACPI drivers missing. Please Install.” or something along those lines. Any ideas?
December 5th, 2009 - 15:22
Tried everything and couldn’t get the ACPI drivers installed. Found info on another site regarding the bios. Flashed the bios with an older version, and got everything installed, up and running. Windows 7 Home Premium with aero running pretty snappy and still haven’t upgraded the memory. Don’t know if this is allowed and will apologize in advance, here is the link to the site that explained about the bios problem. http://www.darrenpopham.com/?p=437
December 10th, 2009 - 17:46
brio, thanks for the link, and no problem on posting it. Glad you found something that worked!
December 13th, 2009 - 03:56
hello!
i have recently updated my EeePC 1005HAB from Win 7 Starter to Win 7 Ultimate. i lost all my drivers for my touch pad, webcam, and the EeePC docking, everything that the netbook originally came with. i have gotten the drivers available on your site, but i still can’t get my webcam driver.. can u help?
December 13th, 2009 - 03:58
and i cant get the ACPI driver to install… im not sure why??
December 14th, 2009 - 16:32
@ Angelica,
For the drivers, go to http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us and search for ’1005HAB’…that should do the trick.
For the ACPI driver, what is the specific error you get when trying to install it?
December 16th, 2009 - 21:22
need help it say installin driver,please wait and it just disappear but i still have the acpi driver missing popup any ideaasz
December 18th, 2009 - 16:19
Here’s a link that I followed to get things running properly with the latest bios update:
http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?pid=653594#p653594
The acpi drivers are not necessary with Windows 7, read the thread.
December 20th, 2009 - 23:40
Hey, did the same thing as angelica and upgraded from windows starter to premium. The touchpad is now working again but the function keys are not. I am afraid to mess anything up! For some odd reason my “touch pad off/on” button doesn’t work as well. I kind of wish I didn’t upgrade from starter but since that came with basically nothing I knew I had to.
oh & randomly when I am typing my cursor will move to another spot. Meaning where the cursor is sitting, if it is there for two long it will automatically transfer to that spot. Does anyone else have that problem?
Thanks!
December 25th, 2009 - 00:18
keeps saying missing asus acpi driver when i install in win xp compatibly mode service pack 2. I”m not flashing the bios to an older version. bios gets updated for a reason. what can I do here?
December 30th, 2009 - 19:51
If you are receiving the “Missing asus ACPI driver” error. Completely uninstall the software and install the 1005HA windows 7 hotkey utility driver.
http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/EeePC/Utility/Hotkey-1_11_01.zip
Solves the problem and all the function keys will work.

You’ve got mint working on the 1005hab? Mine works too, except for certain features. How did you get the webcam to work?
January 11th, 2010 - 21:02
@Haley,
I actually don’t use the webcam. I never tried it.
January 16th, 2010 - 14:29
I installed Win 7 premium and used the SuperHybrid Driver for the 1005HAB. For the rest of the windows 7 drivers, I installed the 1005HA drivers. Everything works perfectly except that flash games in facebook work very slowly. Anyone have any suggestions?
January 20th, 2010 - 23:02
I don’t think those other display modes will be working outside of xp, I’ve tried going back to the factory defaults and that’s the only time they work. Must be the drivers for 7.
That’s alright I guess, since those modes actually ran kinda laggy when I used them.
February 9th, 2010 - 03:41
alright so i downloaded the ACPI thing and followed the steps to install onto Windows 7 but for some reason it keeps getting “interrupted” as soon as it is finishing up copying the files…. any ideas around this?
February 9th, 2010 - 03:51
nvm i got it… so know how to get the camera working?
February 11th, 2010 - 09:13
I just installed the camera driver from asus’s website in winxp compatibility mode. The camera then shows up in device mgr.
Go to support.asus.com, then downloads. Search for 1005hab and choose xp as the OS. You should see the camera driver in the list.
Don’t choose win7 because there aren’t actually any drivers for it on their site (last time I checked anyway).
February 25th, 2010 - 21:37
@Haley
if you download the utility called ecam for the 1005hab for windows 7 drivers that get’s your camera working with a neat little app for capturing pics and video.
February 25th, 2010 - 21:38
@Haley
Sorry I mean 1005ha
February 27th, 2010 - 01:54
hi im not that great with computer n softwares so i just want to know does window 7 work faster n better? this is my 1st laptop mini n i dont want to add something i really dont need…
February 27th, 2010 - 11:29
@brandy kirby,
People might not agree with me, but I can’t say that Windows 7 runs FASTER on my netbook — I’d say it runs the same or maybe ever-so-slightly slower than XP. It looks better, has some nicer features, but I can’t say that it’s critical to get Windows 7. If all you’re gonna do is surf the web, send emails (like most people do with netbooks), then buying a new OS is overkill. Keep in mind a netbook costs around $300. If you go out and buy Windows 7, that’s going to add another $150 – $200 in cost, which doesn’t seem worth it to me.
If you’re happy with Windows XP (which is probably what the netbook will ship with), then there’s no real pressing reason to run out and buy Windows 7. Save your $$$ for now if you’re content with XP.
Just my $.02.
Of course, I’m a tech-head so I always get the latest and greatest OS even if there’s no real compelling reason to, LOL.
March 4th, 2010 - 00:33
Andrew, If you still look at these posts:
Thank you very much. Your post had all the information needed to make the computer work with 7 as well as with XP. The only reason I can think of that all of these people failed is that XP mode may not be in the cheapest build of windows 7. Thank you very much for the info, and for the patience shown to the noobs above.
March 4th, 2010 - 21:32
Hey Eric, no problem. I think we’re all n00bs at some point in our geek lives, I suppose.
I am noticing some confusion here between Windows XP Mode and Windows xx Compatibility Mode — the former being a full image of Windows XP that runs within (some versions of) Windows 7, and the latter simply being a setting that tries to trick a program into working by applying settings from older versions of Windows.
Windows xx Compatibility Mode is accessed by right-clicking a program, and then clicking the “Compatibility” tab. It is (to my knowledge) available in any flavor of Windows 7 (Vista and XP had this capability, too). For getting XP drivers to work in Windows 7 on the ASUS 1005HAB, this is the option I’m talking about.
In contrast, Windows XP Mode only runs on a couple high-end flavors of Win7, and requires a full download of Windows XP and Windows Virtual PC. More info here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/get-started.aspx.
You probably knew that but I’m just clarifying for everyone’s sake. As usual, Microsoft hasn’t made things easy with how they name stuff.
March 15th, 2010 - 04:58
cool tips.. i am following them, works like a charm..the acpi driver still getting the message of missing,need to reinstall acpi driver..i am going to install the 1005ha hot keys, to see if they work.

May 4th, 2010 - 16:52
okay so i bought my eee pc 1005hab with windows 7.. everything is great except for the webcam.. the camera is actually great its just the e-cam where i make my videos sucks.. (i am not referring to skype!! im talking about the e-cam under my e docking) i will be in the middle of a video and next thing it freezes up, stops responding and interrupts my videos.. i have to go through the whole ctrl+alt+del thing every time and my videos are never completed.. this is getting pretty annoying so any insight on this would be much appreciated.. thank you!!
May 8th, 2010 - 15:38
Much thanks to everyone above. I tried to update my EEEPC 1005HAB Win 7 bios and other things but several things stopped working – including the Function Keys. These tips got everything and more going again. You were a great help.
Take Care
May 10th, 2010 - 21:29
@Wendyann,
I wish I could help but I haven’t used that feature. I am not familiar with e-cam. Out of curiosity, have you tried disabling your anti-virus software before using the program?
May 10th, 2010 - 21:34
@StanWhite,
Glad it got you going. Nothing more frustrating than getting a shiny new OS, only to find out none of your hardware works! :\
June 1st, 2010 - 21:04
I GOT MY FN KEYS, MULTI TOUCH PAD AND ACPI TO WORK ON WINDOWS 7 ULTIMATE Eee PC 1005 HAB please read if you are still having trouble. and dont know what to do.
EVERYONE!! I have had the same problem i have seem to overcome the errors and bull crap. I had 7 starter. thought EW! installed ultimate. no FN keys worked. my FN keys didnt work anymore except brightness. awesome. downloaded it from ASUS support. little behold. that only made it worse. now when i reboot i got an error that never went away. so i would go into manager and uninstall it, reinstall. i tried different Eee PC models like HA or HA GG. BUT. i am going to tell you step by step what i did. and hopefully you will have luck. unless this is a fluke and i got REALLY lucky.
updated 7 and it gave me ACPI driver. so i uninstalled it through Manager.
wend to http://support.asus.com/download/down... and selected my Eee PC. download files for XP. NOT 7 YET
click on the ATK tab. this is the ACPI file. *download all files global*
Right click and Run as Administrator. install, and restart your computer, even if it tells you not to.
when the netbook reboots, you should get an error that wont go away.
good..your on your way to fixing to FN keys!!
now, go back to http://support.asus.com/download/down... and do the same as before. only this time go to WIN 7, and download latest BIOS.
run this file. do not unzip. do not restart.
download for XP
Chipset, run, do not restart.
Touchpad, run, do not restart
Utilities > Super Hybrid Engine Utility, run, restart
* though you have these already, this is how i got my FN keys to work.
reboot. same error. go to Device Manager (right click My Computer > Manage > Device Manager
click the “BATTERIES” arrow to extend
right click ACPI compliant method control battery and uninstall. click yes.
(NOTE..before i did this. i went into program files > Eee PC > ACPI > and cliked on every application i could find, as well as the HOTKEY folder, but nothing happened. so i dont know if its important to do that or not)
now. open Program Files, and go to the ACPI folder you extracted earlier, go to setup, right click, run as admin.
uninstall. and reboot when prompted.
WALAH. your FN keys should work just fine.
i know..its really weird. but this is how it worked for me. i spent a lot of time on this. so i hope it helps everyone else out there who is having this annoying problem.
for those who do not have an EeePC 1005HAB i do not know where the files are in the support page, but i do know that they are the same files needed.
if you have any questions or need any help, or please TELL ME IF THIS WORKS!!!
email me at throneofsparta@hotmail.com

@Brandon Krause,
Thanks for the detailed “how to” — much appreciated!
August 25th, 2010 - 09:38
Very nice post. Currently have a client’s Asus Eee PC 1005HAB which needs a new screen. I want to recommend upgrading to Windows 7 from XP also and it’s nice to learn from you that 7 will run fine (as long as I update all the appropriate drivers).
Thanks so much.
September 5th, 2010 - 10:58
can someone help me? I just installed windows 7 on my 1005hab and the touchpad doesn’t work at all. i installed the driver that this post pointed to and it still doesn’t work.
(my touchpad didn’t work when i tested ubuntu on this netbook either.)
September 6th, 2010 - 09:42
@blakscribe,
No problem. Glad it’s working for you.
September 6th, 2010 - 09:45
@littlejoeward,
I don’t know exactly, but here are some thoughts:
Did you ever use the 1005HAB with Windows XP? Was the touchpad working then?
Can the touchpad be disabled from the BIOS? Check to see if it’s one of the devices that can be disabled.
Maybe the touchpad is just defective?
See if any of those ideas point you in the right direction.
